Isn't "Liking" and "ReTweeting" basically the same thing?
Very often I work with people that think that liking a tweet and retweeting someone’s tweet is pretty much the same thing. I usually explain the difference and then move on. But something finally sunk in – I’ve been seeing a lot fewer retweets in the last year or so, than say, 5 years ago. Why is that? I think it’s because folks don’t understand the difference very well.
And the difference is huge.
When you like a tweet, you not only make that little empty shell of an icon turn a warm red, you’re also warming the heart of the person who wrote the tweet. I mean, seriously, on Twitter or anyplace else, doesn’t everyone want to be liked?
What does liking a tweet convey? That you agree with the message in the tweet, that you enjoyed the tweet, or maybe you just found it useful.
In case you enjoy a game of Trivial Pursuit from time to time, you may want to keep this one in your pocket – liking a retweet actually gives the like to the the Retweeter, not to the person that sent out the original tweet. I don’t know when you’ll ever need to know that, but just in case, I got you covered 👍.
While likes make everyone feel warm and fuzzy, retweets are the real powerhouse.
If you’re a business owner, small, medium or huge, you want retweets. Here’s how it works:
Sally has 1,000 followers. She’s selling widgets. She sends out a tweet about a widget sale that lasts only 24 hours.
If Sally gets 5 likes and 0 retweets, hopefully a few of her followers noticed that tweet and took some kind of action.
If Sally gets 2 likes and 10 retweets, things will probably end up with Sally’s PayPal notifications springing up a little more often. Let’s say each of those 10 retweets were from accounts that also had 1,000 followers, now Sally’s tweet has the chance to be seen by the followers of all of those accounts and, of course, her own followers.
Did that make sense?
SO WHAT’S A TWEETER TO DO?
If you see a tweet that you think is worth sharing, then retweet it. It gives your followers a chance to see it also, perhaps discuss it, and if any of your followers also retweet it, well, you see where I’m going with this. If enough people do this, it’s call “going viral”.
What about ReTweeting With Comment?
Ahhh! This is where engagement starts! This is where two people begin a discussion that could possibly turn into a business relationship, a friendship, or maybe you’ve just got an opportunity to gain another customer.
Remember: People are more likely to buy from someone they know, like and trust. It cannot be said often enough. You know what else cannot be said often enough?
