3 Easy Ways To Grow Your Twitter Following
Twitter is the easiest and fastest way to connect with your audience online.
Just don’t expect them to come running to you as soon as you open your Twitter account.
Growing Your Twitter Following
There are so many posts about how to grow your Twitter following (and I have to stop right here and say I’m always surprised at how often the people that created the post have very few followers themselves) and it always sounds so complicated. But it’s really easy. You don’t even have to be especially outgoing. I’m an introvert – make that a super-introvert, and if I can do it so can you!
Twitter Growth Tip #1
Before you start growing your Twitter account, make sure these three things are up to par:
- Your profile picture
- Your photo cover
- Your bio
Put yourself in the shoes of a potential follower. Would you follow someone that didn’t have a profile photo or a bio and little to no followers or tweets?
Do you need help with getting those three things right? You can comment below or email me or tweet me at @AskForLiz.
Twitter Growth Tip #2
Follow others. A bunch of others. A ton of others. There are millions of people on social media all the time. If you sit around like a wallflower, it’s unlikely that you’ll be noticed by many people. Reach out to others by following them. This leads us to …
How to find the right people to follow?
This is going to sound a little off, but I’m going to tell you anyway. When you’re first starting out don’t be as picky as you will be later. You may (actually, you should) have a specific target audience in mind, but the truth is, there’s just something about us humans that don’t like to be the first to like. Or the first to comment. Or the first to follow an account with 5 followers. You’ll notice that some of the people who you followed will follow you back. Engage with them and see if they are people you’d want to spend time with. If not, you can always hit that Unfollow button.
The important take-away here is to get started with reaching out.
A good way to start is to find someone you’d like to emulate and start following the people that follow them. Why? You already have something in common – you like the same kind of things the person you’re following posts.
After that, find a hashtag that interests you and follow it for a while. From the group that you find using this hashtag, pick the ones you like and follow them.
The secret behind growing your Twitter account? It’s crazy simple. Talk to other people. #TwitterTips Click To Tweet
Twitter Growth Tip #3
Once you’ve looked at other accounts and what they tweet, and followed hashtags that look interesting, start jumping into conversations. If you’re nervous you’ll do that wrong thing, start out slow by hitting that little heart on the tweets that you like. You’ll probably get a few people responding to you just from that one small action. Once they do, hit reply and respond back to them.
If you’re bolder and are ready to jump in with both feet, then absolutely become part of the conversation! Find something that you find interesting or tickles your funny bone or whatever and say something to the person that tweeted. If you enjoyed the conversation, follow all the people that took part in it. And then make a habit of engaging with them in the future.
If you’re in a hurry to find a group of people that you can engage with, try joining a Twitter Chat. You might want to consider not engaging the first few times you follow along, but at some point, you’ll start to participate and you’ll find this is one of the fastest ways to grow your account and have a good time, too.
If you’re interested in joining some Twitter Chats, take a peek at the Twitter Chat calendar I made that you can embed in your own google calendar here. This is by no means an exhaustive list (I’m sure there are thousands of #chats you could join) but it’s a starting point.
There’s a lot more to Twitter than the brief outline I’ve shared here, but this is enough to get you started. If you’d like to know more about Twitter Chats, let me know in the comments below.
Do you have specific questions or areas you’d be interested in learning more about? I’m happy to answer your questions in the comments below or on Twitter.
Frankly, there are so many things I could talk to you about Twitter that I don’t know where to start! So DO ask me and I’m happy to share what I know.
